Interessant, wie Wired berichtet, hat GlaxoSmithKline einen Großteil ihrer Forschungsdaten jetzt zur freien Verfügung gestellt.

In der Pressemitteilung heisst es:

Marking another positive step in the collaborative fight against cancer, GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) announced today the release of genomic profiling data for over 300 cancer cell lines via the National Cancer Institute’s cancer Bioinformatics Grid™ (caBIG™). The caBIG™ initiative is a network of infrastructure and tools that enables the collection, analysis, and sharing of data and knowledge along the entire research pathway from laboratory bench to patient bedside. By releasing the cell line data via caBIG™, GSK could be enabling other cancer research institutions to save considerable drug development time and capital in their future cancer therapeutic research

Ich denke, das macht für alle Seiten Sinn, denn einerseits kann die Krebsforschung schneller voranschreiten, wenn die Daten frei zugänglich sind, andererseits können dann diese Erkenntnisse den großen Firmen helfen, neue Produkte zu entwickeln.

Interessant wäre es allerdings noch, die genaue Lizenz zu sehen, unter der die Daten freigegeben werden. Wenn natürlich nur GSK etwas davon hat, z.B. das durch diese Daten gewonnene Erkenntnisse nur von GSK in Produkte umgesetzt werden darf, dann sieht das natürlich wieder etwas anders aus. Wenn ich aber die Website von caBIG richtig verstehe, dann dürfen die Ergebnisse der durch sie geförderten Projekte auch kommerziell verwertet werden.

Da nicht jeder weiss, was caBIG eigentlich ist (wie z.B. ich), hier die Erklärung aus den FAQ:

It is an open-source, open-access information network enabling cancer researchers to share tools, data, applications, and technologies according to agreed-upon standards and identified needs. The goal of caBIG™ is to provide an informatics infrastructure that supports a collaborative network, or “grid,” among the cancer and biomedical research communities. The infrastructure and tools of caBIG™ are widely applicable beyond the cancer community.

Mal schauen, was draus wird, aber zumindest als Außenstehender sehe ich das als Schritt in die richtige Richtung.
