SLGA: Linden Lab releases Capabilities Server as Open Source (technical)

Linden Lab released their capabilities server under an MIT license yesterday. It is written in Python and available as part of the mulib package (trac view here) which was released as Open Source earlier.

The capabilities server is one of the core modules needed for the Second Life Grid to run and will play a big part in the interconnectivity protocol which the AWG is working on. If you want to know more about Capabilities please have a look at my summary.

What’s missing unfortunately seems to be a test (I would like a doctest) explaining how it works. Thus I will try to figure it out soon and might report back.

Hey. If you can't figure out how it works, I was planning on adding it to the "mud" server script that comes with mulib, and I even have most of the changes done, but I've been busy with PyCon and haven't checked it in yet. I'll try to get it done and checked in today.

Well, to be honest I haven't really tried to see how it works, just wanted to say YAY! :-) But any example would be great of course :-)

Hope you enjoy PyCon and I hope you will also be at EuroPython, we are busy planning it right now :)

I also wanted to add that I am planning to redo my login server and convert it into an Agent Domain. While doing this I guess I will also use this caps server then instead of my own :-)

The Lindens should have the same kind of visionary plan to release their governance capabilities as they do their "capabilities server".

Hmm. It sure would be great to get to EuroPython one of these years. I have never been to europe.

I'll start thinking about whether it's really feasible… Man it would be great!

Of course it would be great :-) We can do an AWG sprint :) (I know at least one person who might be interested in that, too).
